Salah satu yang menjadi momok bagi kaum wanita adalah kanker payudara (BREAST CANCER). kanker payudara adalah pertumbuhan sel yang abnormal pada jaringan payudara wanita.
Sejumlah penelitian membuktikan bahwa kenker payudara bisa dicegah. salah satu langkah penting untuk mengetahui lebih dini apakah seorang wanita mengembangkan kanker payudara atau tidak adalah dengan pemeriksaan dini dengan mamografi.
Pemeriksaan mamografi menggunakan sinar X dapat memperlihatkan kelainan pada payudara, bahwa dalam bentuk yang terkecil hingga kurang dari 5mm atau mikrolafikasi. ” inilah kelebihan pemeriksaan mamografi,” terang Dr Sariningsih hikmawati SpRad, Staf medik Fungsional bidang Radiologi RS Kanker Dharmais Jakarta.
Beberapa keuntungan mamografi, lanjut dia, diantaranya ialah, mampu mengevaluasi benjolan pada payudara (nipple discharge) dan sebagai mokrolafikasi terhadap Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS) yang merupakan karsinoma payudara dengan sel-sel tumor berada dalam duktus kelenjar payudara dan belum menginfiltrasi ke stroma.
Mamografi juga sensitif untuk mendeteksi lesi (ganguan jaringan) yang tidak teraba dalam pemeriksaan payudara atau yang disebut Non Palpable Breast Lesion (NPBL).
Untuk itu, mamografi juga mendukung Breast Conserving Surgery/Treatmen(BCS/BCT), yaitu terapi atau pembedahan dengan mempertahankan payudara tetap utuh.
Dengan menggunakan mamografi, kelainan pada payudara dapat ditentukan dengan akurat. Hal tersebut ditunjukan oleh Breast Imaging Reporting dan Data System(BIRADS) yang merupakan klasifikasi yang ditetapkan oleh American College of Radiologi (ACR) untuk reporting skrinting mamografi.
